Denver Becomes World’s 8th LEED Platinum City | Zocalo Community Development

As Denver continues to invest in a more sustainable and resilient future, the city has earned one of the highest recognitions in environmental leadership: LEED for Cities Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED is one of the world’s most widely recognized green building and sustainability rating systems. The LEED for Cities framework expands beyond individual buildings to evaluate how cities are improving environmental performance, resilience, infrastructure, transportation, energy efficiency, and overall quality of life for residents.

Denver’s Platinum certification recognizes the city’s ongoing commitment to climate action and sustainable growth through measurable initiatives and long-term planning. Key efforts contributing to the designation include building electrification, renewable energy investments, expanded transit infrastructure, urban forestry initiatives, and climate resilience programs designed to better prepare communities for extreme weather and rising temperatures.

One of the city’s most impactful initiatives has been Energize Denver, a building performance policy focused on improving energy efficiency across large commercial and multifamily buildings. Since 2018, overall energy use among buildings 25,000 square feet and larger has declined, even as hundreds of new buildings have been constructed throughout the city.

Denver has also continued investing in walkable neighborhoods, public transit improvements, bike-friendly infrastructure, and drought-resilient green spaces to support healthier, more connected communities. Community-led programs focused on climate education and engagement are further helping residents participate in sustainable practices across the city.

June’s Bike to Work Day brought energy, community, and plenty of cyclists to Weathervane! Located directly along one of Boulder’s busiest bike paths, Weathervane was proud to welcome a tremendous turnout as riders stopped by to refuel, connect, and celebrate a healthier, more sustainable way to commute.
